Recycling Of Paper

Concept Explanation

Recycling of Paper

Paper has been made from a wide variety of materials like wood pulp, rice, water plants, cotton, even old clothes. Now a days, paper fiber comes mainly from pulpwood logs and recycled paper products. As paper is obtained from natural resources therefore , it becomes important for us to reduce the use of paper or recycle it. Recycling of paper is the process of converting waste paper material into new material available for reuse.

Steps of recycling paper are :-

 Sorting :-

The process of recycling starts with sorting the paper. This can be done at home or at a recycling center. Transporting :- The papers are then tied and transported to warehouses for storage. From there they are transferred to the pulper. Pulping :- The pulper is a large vat that has chemicals and water. The paper is chopped into tiny pieces and then heated in the vat. This turns the cellulose fibres into mush. Screening :- The mushy pulp is then screened. Basically the pulp is pushed through screens that have holes and slots of different shapes and sizes. Cleaning :- After screening, the pulp is cleaned further to remove any contaminants by spinning the mushy mixture. Heavy objects like staples, paper clips, and plastic pins and thrown from the cylindrical cone shaped vats. De inking :- After this, depending on the paper, the pulp might go through the de inking phase. This process removes printing ink and glue residues and adhesives. Washing :- The washing stage involves rinsing pulp with water to remove the ink particles. For this the pulp in floatation vat in which air and chemicals known as surfactants are added. Ink and other particles attach themselves to air particles, float to the surface where they are removed as scum. Bleaching :- The paper is then treated further to separate all of the color particles from the mush. If cardboard is to be made, then the pulp is not bleached. Rolling :- The pulp is then sprayed on to wire screens, which drains the water and bonds. This watery sheet is pressed through a number of press rollers to remove all the water. It is then dried using heated metal rollers and wound in to giant roll.

There are different ways by which we can reduce the use of paper :-

  • We should always write on both sides of paper sheet.
  • Unused pages from old note books can be torn off and made into a new book for doing rough work and other miscellaneous work.
